From end to end you have caching on the bac­kend (mem­ca­ched, xca­che, etc.) to pre­vent your data­ba­ses being lit on fire, edge caching on con­tent deli­very net­works (CDN’s) in hopes that your bro­w­ser will cache assets it sees more than once.
